The ruins of Hald Castle

Discover Hald Castle near Viborg, one of Central Jutland's most atmospheric ruins with magnificent views of the lake Hald Sø. Dramatic history and peaceful nature await you here - a perfect destination for both culture and nature lovers.

Explore the ruins of Hald Castle

Hald Castle is the ruin of a former medieval castle and part of the historic area De Fem Halder, located south of Viborg. The ruin is built on the foundations of what is known as the ‘Third Hald’, also known as Bispens Hald or Jørgen Friis' Hald. Jørgen Friis was the last Catholic bishop of Viborg and built the castle around 1528 as a strong and modern fortress - in the midst of the upheaval leading up to the Reformation, when Luther and Hans Tavsen set new religious ideas in motion.

Enjoy nature and the view from the tower

Today, visitors can move freely around the castle grounds, where nature and history merge in the hilly landscape around Hald Lake. Climb the iconic tower for a breathtaking view of the lake and surrounding forests - especially beautiful in autumn colours or on a clear summer day. Here you can feel the wings of history in the wind in the treetops.

Part of the Five Halders

Hald Castle is part of the unique cultural landscape known as the Five Halders - five different castles and residences from different periods, all within walking distance. The area provides an exciting insight into 800 years of castle and Danish history and can be explored on foot along paths, bridges and walkways in the scenic terrain.

Practical information

Admission to Hald Castle is free all year round. The ruin is located approximately 10 km south of Viborg and is easily reached by car, bike or via hiking trails. There is a car park at Hald Hovedgård, from where it is a short walk to the ruin.
