The Nature Trail from Silkeborg to Horsens

The closed down railway trail stretching 61 km between Silkeborg and Horsens today takes cyclists, hikers, and horseback riders through luxuriant river valleys, old beech forests, and the hilly Lake District Søhøjlandet in central Jutland.

A Trail for Everyone

The railway path has an asphalt surface on one side for bicycles, wheelchairs, pushchairs and rollerblades, while a gravel surface on the other side of the path is mainly for horse riders and hikers.

Although the path is a disused railway, five kilometres of the route is still used as a railway during the summer months and at Christmas. Here, an old veteran train drives off with guests on the beautiful route, which is called Denmark's most beautiful railway. Read more about the Veteran Railway Bryrup-Vrads here.

Cycle route

The railway path starts at the Dalgasgade/Søndre Ringgade junction in Silkeborg. From here it heads south through the Vesterskoven forest. In several places you cycle on embankments where the views of the surrounding hilly landscape are breathtaking.

Along the way, you'll pass places like Labyrinthia, where you can try to find your way out through large labyrinths or the Art Centre Silkeborg Bad, which has art both inside and out. You'll also find several rest areas with tables, benches and shelters.

From Silkeborg, hikers can follow the Trækstien trail along the Gudenåen river to Randers or a beautiful hiking route to Aarhus.

Practical information

There are good opportunities to rest along the way - partly at one of the many rest areas with tables and benches - and partly at one of the primitive accommodation sites with shelters, water and mule toilets located at intervals of 10-15 km.
