In Randers, art is a part of everyday life, and the sculptures are diverse and spread across the city and countryside.
Discover the many sculptures
At skulpturer.randers.dk (danish) you can read about the 70 sculptures and works of art, including the five city gates in Randers. Explore artworks inspired by a Japanese torii gate, a tomb from antiquity, the Tower of Babel from the Old Testament and many more.
The three pillars
The Three Pillars is Sven Dalsgaard's alternative version of a Japanese torii gate. Torii gates belong to the original Japanese Shinto religion. Here, they act as markers that demarcate the transition to a sacred area or something particularly remarkable in the landscape. Dalsgaard's ‘torii gate’ marks the transition from land to water and beautifully frames the mouth of the Gudenå River in Randers Fjord.
The Gudenå Jar
The sculpture has the shape of a Greek amphora: a vase with two handles that was used as a tombstone in antiquity. Out of the vase, a mist of water is sprayed over the little girl, who is sheltering under an umbrella. At the same time, the sculpture welcomes visitors to the city and sets the scene for fairytale stories where only the imagination sets the limits.
Chapel for the present
The multi-coloured sculpture is decorated with glazed bricks. The spiralling tower soars above the stairway to the sculpture's underground interior, reminiscent of the Tower of Babel from the Old Testament. The interior of the sculpture serves as a space for contemplation and silence in the midst of the bustling city life, so it is recommended to take your time to experience the sculpture.
The Iguana Breakers
The Iguana Wrestlers shows two boys fighting over a lizard - the Iguana. The sculpture was created by Randers artist Niels Holm and previously stood on Frederiksplads (now Østervold), where it was inaugurated in 1908. Over time, the two boys have witnessed many important local events and moved to a location by Randers Stadium in 1962.
Bar Roma
Bar Roma is a sculpture created by the internationally recognised artist Erik A. Frandsen. The work is located in the middle of Thor's Staircase, where the eight metre long sculpture attracts attention well before the foot of the stairs. Bar Roma has the shape of an overturned statue and is made of spray-painted aluminium. The sculpture itself weighs 1.6 tonnes and the base weighs 6 tonnes.
Redfall
Ingvar Cronhammar's Redfall is an incredibly mesmerising work of art when the lights and water supply are on. Through the window openings, a contrast is created between the white, almost sterile outer shell of the building and the inner, blood-red waterfall.
Karin Michaëlis
The bust is a monument to one of the nation's most important female writers, born and raised in Randers. Karin Michaëlis' (1872-1950) extensive and internationally recognised oeuvre was controversial and innovative and revolved around the role of women, identity, freedom, erotic love, the child and the imagination. The bust is made by sculptor Gudrun Steen Andersen (b. 1950).
